Applicant Information

Is the Hispanic Assistance Fund currently granting new scholarships?

Yes. The Board of Trustees is now accepting new applications for consideration. Please note the deadline dates below.

What are the deadlines for application?

The deadline for the fall semester is April 1, and November 15 for the spring semester.

What is the purpose of the Hispanic Assistance Fund (HAF)?

The Hispanic Assistance Fund is a qualified 501 (c)(3) charitable organization whose purpose is to grant scholarships to qualified Hispanics in order to enable them to study at Bob Jones University where they will be prepared in the essentials of knowledge and the Christian faith.

How long has the Hispanic Assistance Fund been in existence?

The HAF was granted tax-exemption in 2004 and began awarding scholarships shortly thereafter.

Who oversees the Hispanic Assistance Fund?

The HAF is governed by a three-member volunteer Board of Trustees, all of whom are themselves of Hispanic descent. The volunteer board members are responsible for reviewing each potential grantee's application, interviewing each applicant, and determining which students are most qualified.

Who is eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Hispanic Assistance Fund?

Students of Hispanic descent who plan to attend Bob Jones University are eligible to apply.

Must a student be accepted by Bob Jones University before he or she is eligible for funds?

Yes. In order for a student's application to the Hispanic Assistance Fund to be complete, the student must first have completed an application with and been accepted by Bob Jones University.

What criteria must be met?

Potential grantees need to demonstrate academic ability, spiritual leadership, and financial need.

What can the grants be used for?

The grants may be used to pay tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses of instruction at BJU.

Can a student qualify for a scholarship to attend graduate school?

Yes, however, undergraduate students are considered for scholarships before graduate students.

Does the Hispanic Assistance Fund provide loans to students?

No. At this present time, the Hispanic Assistance Fund provides scholarships only.

How are grants paid to students?

The Hispanic Assistance Fund will issue a check in the name of the student and Bob Jones University. The student will be required to endorse the check over to BJU, which will be applied toward tuition fees, books, supplies, and equipment for courses of instruction at BJU.

Does the student need to have references as part of the application?

Yes, the application form itself contains information as to what types of references are required for a student to apply to the Hispanic Assistance Fund.

What is the typical scholarship grant by the Hispanic Assistance Fund?

As the Lord provides, HAF seeks to grant anywhere from $1000 to $4000 per student per semester.

Will the University act as a guarantor for the student if they are accepted?

Please understand that because the HAF grants only partial scholarships that neither the HAF itself nor its board members can act as a guarantor on behalf of any student.

Is the student required to work in order to be eligible to receive funds from the Hispanic Assistance Fund?

No.

What is the Hispanic Assistance Fund's relationship with Bob Jones University?

The Hispanic Assistance Fund is a separate, independent tax-exempt fund that was created by individuals who love the school, who are of Hispanic descent themselves, and who desire to see more Hispanic students enrolled at BJU to be trained for the service of Jesus Christ.

How are applications handled?

Properly filed applications received by the Hispanic Assistance Fund's deadlines will be collected in the HAF office. Soon after each deadline date, board members wil meet to review all applications received.

Board members will then conduct phone interviews with applicants (or when possible, face-to-face interviews) to discuss the application materials.

The board will meet again for a final review of applications and for prayerful consideration about whom to choose. Decisions will be forwarded to the liaison office, which will contact applicants with the board's decisions.

Does a student need to fill out an application every semester in order to be eligible for the Hispanic Assistance Fund?

No. Students are automatically reconsidered for the second semester of a school year if they received a scholarship in the first semester. A new application need only be submitted for every new school year.
